Mark Andy Robiego Garcia (b.1984) mines his young life and fills his canvases
with his digs. The depth of his visual articulation of what he believes should be the primary
source of his art speaks, too, of the depth of lived experience that belies his age. At 27,
he has painted spiritual truths, deeply-seated grief and wrath, and a complex web of feeling
all drawn from the realities of his own life. He does not want it any other way. He has a
deeply-rooted conviction about the rootedness of his art in his being and persona.
His first show, "So Near Yet So Far" drew from his experience as an Overseas Filipino
Worker in Saudi Arabia. Later, stalked by tragedies in his family life, he has harnessed
these into his subject of his art in his second and third show. "Under the Watchful Eyes"(2009)
and "Permanent" (2010). In his fourth show, (”For Dear Life”, 2010) and fifth show,
("Acquainted with the Night", 2011), however, he focused more on the light that comes
after the dark periods of his life. In his shows, he has consistently worked in a painterly style
with vigorous brushwork which serves him well in bringing out his various figures, clear and
emphatic but going beyond the strictures of verisimilitude. It is also a style which gives him wider
latitude for expressionism.
Andy graduated fine arts, major in advertising, at the Technological University of the Philippines,
Manila. He won the Grand Prize in the 2007 Metrobank Art and Design Exellence and
Juror’s Choice Award of Exellence in the Philippine Art Awards in the same year.
A full time artist and currently resides at Quezon City, Philippines.
