Statement

Carlos Ulloa delights in creating visual puns to communicate his macabre humor. He finds comfort in posing caustic questions. Carlos Ulloa works in a richness of concept and craftsmanship. The enduring elegance of worked metals and finished woods are blended with the rustic nature of "found objects" and the uncomely yet arbitrary nature of today's mass produced plastics. The hardwoods and "found objects" are native to areas Carlos Ulloa has lived in or visited, therefore each piece is a deliberate inference of his lust for travel and intercultural experience. Consequently, the allure of the works often lies in the ambiguity between their biographical and autobiographical nature.

Growing up in Latin America, being educated in the U.S., and living in Europe have provided rich influences for his sculpture. Diversity is an inspiration, and, like emotions, Carlos Ulloa's works often follow an unpredictable course. He is relentlessly addressing different subjects and infusing different materials into his work ...a chameleon changes his expression to survive. Every one of his works is one of a kind, entirely conceived and executed by him.
