Tang Yongxiang was born in Han Chuan City, a small town very near Wu Han, Hubei Province in 1977.
He graduated from Han Chuan Teachers School, then chose to go to university at Hu Bei Academy of Fine Art for a Bachelor and a Masters degree.
In July 2007 Tang decided to be an artist, and moved to Beijing just after graduating from university. Before his solo show at Hemuse Gallery, he participated in some shows with his realistic works. About his new work, he writes, "I am not only focused on the image now, and I am trying to empty everything out, including what I learnt at school, concepts and my emotions. I want to use my own very stupid, slow method to discover new kinds of emerging and inherent relationships in my painting. I face a blank canvas, usually without a draft or any idea. It is very difficult to deal with these complex feelings mixed with cleanness, clarity, conflict, instinct... It really needs a very long time to ferment these unexpected things which can be accepted, finally.
"My working life is very simple. I have several friends with whom I can talk about art, and I have the internet and catalogues that enable me to learn from good artists. I hope I will be able to show something deeper in a future exhibition, maybe two years from now."
