i am drawn to the mystery of our natural world - an explosion of life and beauty. it's all around us when we pay attention. ….the rain that brings new life to a flower, flashing lightening, stars. i wonder if there is more to us than just a collection of cells, and what's out there in the universe? my art explores these questions, capturing the most simple, the most complex, and everything in between.
the subject of my paintings is these often overlooked mysteries. i explore what we are missing in the microcosm of cells that unite in our own back yard to form everyday beauty, and conversely what we don't know about the vast macrocosm that we inhabit. from the beauty of a simple cell to the limitless night sky, color and mystery as far as my eyes can see and beyond.
my canvas is wood and my creative materials are heat and wax. not ordinary and fragile candle wax...but pigmented beeswax with a hardening agent that has been used since the 5th century b.c.e and while an obscure art form, can last for generations. this ancient art form is called encaustic.
