I write art criticism and fiction.
I am a staff writer with ArtSlant and cover the contemporary art scene in Paris. My approach to arts writing is a reaction against the jargon filled, quasi-intellectual texts I most commonly read. I believe that there is something interesting to be said about art, and that the role of the critic is to make a bridge between the subjective and wider perspective, to offer something interesting and entertaining, without operating within the realm of gallery speak, or trying to prove academic credentials.
My fiction has been published in a number of international publications, most recently PLU Journal, La Bastille, and CORE the international journal of the Humanities published by the American University in Paris.
Otherwise I'm a simple person and I like my routines. I start every day with a bowl of porridge, I end every day with a dinner, two cups of tea, and three games of checkers, then my girlfriend and I swap clothes and watch superhero movies. My name is James Loks, I am a writer and journalist based in Paris.
