August is the toughest month to find a gallery exhibition that will inspire most critics’ fingers to pound the keyboard. With so many galleries closed, and others emphasizing the coming season’s first exhibition in early September, there tends to be a general lack of interest in mounting a show, especially anything substantive. Mapplethorpe for me, had always been someone whose work I respected by virtue of the quality of his prints, but always someone I felt indifferent to. It is much the same for certain countries that I have never had a desire to visit. It's not that they aren't interesting; just more that the sheer number of travel guides have pretty much had the place well-covered. Mapplethorpe is someone of whom there are many comprehensive travel guides but no reason for me to visit.

Of course nobody’s shocked anymore. Well…maybe a few of the oldest of Old Guard Palm Beachers.
