I've become increasingly aware of how people find negative reviews so much more entertaining than positive reviews, and so I'm about to let everyone down. This is a really great show, and an unusual one, and interesting for lots of different reasons; but really one main one. It's also worth saying that the title/name of the exhibition really is fitting for the experience of seeing the show. The big main thing to say is it's a curated show, although Jens Hoffmann prefers the tag 'exhibition maker' t... [more]

At its best, the invocation of the everyday stimulates a kind of miasmic and pervasive timelessness: vast empty skies, winds and wolves howling and the cruel loneliness of existence and so on and so forth. At its most trite, the quotidian as a subject in art (from slice-of-lifers to unrelenting activists)  begs for sanctimonious genuflection. Pathos-inducing relics (crinkled bus transfers, a single baby’s sock) ease to the weepy ponderance of personal history. A powerful facult... [more]

Empathy, he once had decided, must be limited to herbivores or anyhow ominvores who could depart from a meat diet. Because, ultimately, the empathic gift blurred the boundaries between hunter and victim, between the successful and the defeated.   Science fiction is an art of prophecy, a process of historicizing the present, a reflection of an ongoing present as past, and a refraction of future permutations. The imaginary, symbolic, and real become interwoven through a proce... [more]

“For, facing a world that is unintelligible and enigmatic, our task is clear: we must make that world even more unintelligible, even more enigmatic.” – Jean Beaudrillard, The Vital Illusion, 2000 This may sound a bit earnest, but bear with me: you must go see James Welling Glass House at Regen Projects. Of the twenty photographs, you will have your favorites. Mine is 0462. ... 0462, an inkjet print, 40 3/4 x 57 1/4 inches, from 2009, this picture (titled after its number in the printe... [more]

The Pictures Generation, 1974–1984 is the first major museum exhibition to focus on a highly influential group of somewhat affiliated artists that were one of the first generations raised with popular television and an abundance of disposable products. This upbringing, coupled with the rising popularity of M.F.A. academic training that often discussed Barthian post-structuralism, produced a generation of artists wanting to deconstruct visual culture by appropriating its photograp... The group show No Room acknowledges that we tend to be conflicted when it comes to modern architecture. On one hand, the sleek, orderly, programmed spaces become easy symbols for the fall of Modernist optimism, serving as a vehicle for general critique ranging from the failure of housing projects to Facism. On the other hand, many people still seek the lifestyles to which Modern Architecture aspired, lifestyles which conform, in the words of the shows’ curators, to a “nearly insatiable co... [more]
