Drew Testa is a sculptor, installation artist, and arts educator. Testa received a BS in Studio Art from Skidmore College and a MS in Art Education from the College of St. Rose. His work has been shown in a number of galleries, both conventional and non-conventional, around the Capital Region of NY. In the summer of 2013, Testa had his first solo show in Chelsea at the Rush Arts Gallery.
I view life as a series of processes, from microscopic to the macroscopic. My artwork is formed much the same way. The sculptures and installations are born out of meticulous, meditative, and obsessive fiber processes that all together consume a majority of the creative progression. I believe this way of working gives the artwork a sense of independent and spontaneous life. Once lashed together, the fiber panels are injected with foam and the work gains life; life that was never predetermined. The work takes on its own character.
The arrangement of the artwork is also its own process. With every showing, I rearrange my works in new configurations. While arranging, I want the pieces to respond to the space as if it is an extension of the area. As if they had grown out of that space.
My work is inspired by the vastness of the universe and the smallness of single organisms. I have always been an avid reader of science articles, especially ones from biology and astrophysics. It is through my creation process that I try to digest these articles and draw connections between them.
