Statement
For
the last three years I have explored the art historical myth of the 12th century artist, Giotto and his “perfect circle”. I have now deviated from this
singular idea. These painted circles not only represent the obsessive qualities
familiar in my previous work, but also reveal an intuitive , rhythmic order. This simple theme is intimate and vast yet obvious
and oblique. Some have suggested
that they appear to be a secret code or language and this has a remote
possibility because a lot of the work is begun in western written form, from
left to right. Through repetition to the point that they have become
ritualistic, these circles mark a time and hold a space that I have touched as
an artist. Begun as a challenge to myself to see if a “perfect circle” was even
possible- these circles have evolved into an important study in patience and
hopefully, one day, I will be able to unearth a hidden truth that I know they
contain.
