I am an artist based in Brighton, England and have been represented by the Northcote Gallery London since 1994 and regularly exhibit nationally and internationally. My work is focused on paintings and drawings of the South Downs.
"Richard Whadcock continues his exploration of the South Downs and coastal landscape beyond. Whadcock’s lyrical paintings possess a dignity and serenity. Pure and sensitive, the emotions that enter tend to be of a quiet and meditative nature, each painting an emotional heartland and a place to restore our balance.
Whadcock employs subtle effects of light and dark, light and shade or a gradual differentiation of one and the same tone. In Clearing he offers a point of calm only moments before the advent of a heavy storm front. The painting is shot through with an extraordinary subtle range of colour and seems removed from the current context of time. Within the stillness of the clearing there is a sense of shifting, a thrumming, in the vibration of the atmosphere.
The use of oil on canvas allows Whadcock to add subsequent layers of paint without impairing or covering the layer below. By using extremely fine and transparent layers the application of a glaze gently modifies the colour over which it is laid, allowing backgrounds to be shaded off or nuances of tone to be achieved. Intersection invites the viewer to meditate on the landscape while thin veils of colour engage the senses drawing the viewer in to marks, lines and traces of life.
The sensual curve of the landscape in Contours calls to mind the thoughts of philosopher Gaston Bachelard, ‘the grace of a curve is an invitation to remain. We cannot break away from it without hoping to return’. Richard Whadcock’s landscapes echo this response, calling the viewer to return time and again.
