Rory Alan MacLean was born in Phoenix, AZ. He first studied under portrait painter Jim Garrison. In 2006, Rory received a B.F.A. with honors upon graduating from Art Center College of Design, CA. There he had the opportunity to study under accomplished artists such as F. Scott Hess, Alex Gross, and Kent Williams. Outside of formal education he pursued knowledge on artists whom he admired from the history of western art. He considers Peter Paul Rubens, Gilbert Stuart, and William Merritt Chase to be some of his main influences. Rory's artwork is characterized by strong composition, clarity of color and solid draftsmanship. His palette is modeled on that used by the 18th century American painter Gilbert Stuart, and he employs it with a modern sensibility.
