After the Frac Aquitaine in Bordeaux, the Fondation d’entreprise Ricard will present the second version of the exhibition, a reactualization of the first which will privilege a point of view on the current period, re-centering the exhibition around living artists, some emerging on the international art scene, and new or recent works, in keeping with the Fondation’s actions.
The exhibition proposes a line of sight, a subjective and critical point of view on an artistic scene rich in contradictions... [more]

The works on show at the Camden Arts Centre are the latest in their series of artist-selected shows at the North London gallery. Somewhere between a curatorial exercise and art-by-proxy, these shows have revealed both the personal and vicarious aspects of artist curation/selection. The work selected by Simon Starling comprises works by 30 artists and designers, revisiting the history of the Camden Art Centres programmes over the last 50 years. By-and-large the works occupy the positio... [more]

IT’S EVERYWHERE!
I suspect that many of us have experienced those quirky incidents where a hitherto unfamiliar subject is brought to our attention and then it suddenly seems to pop up everywhere. And I mean everywhere. We keep tripping over the now-familiar subject as if making up for lost time.
I first came across Gustave Courbet’s 1866 painting L’origine du monde (Origin of the World) about a year ago when researching material for my upcoming artist residency in Paris. Let’s be frank; onc... [more]

With Moby-Dick, the Wattis presents the second of three shows rousting the spirits of great American literature. Although painted like a Nautica bedroom set with navy walls and white text, each room conjures the salty atmosphere of a heaving ship with alternately droning and ranting snippets from Orson Welles's recitation of Moby Dick. These elements (whale, walls, and Welles) attempt to interlace work from thirty-three international artists—no small feat.
Of course, I don't envy the... [more]

I checked the new group show at Fred [London], Collage, London/New York, as it was being installed. There were some wonderful things spread about the gallery waiting to be hung. The opportunity to stage a major exhibition of collages arose from contact with Pavel Zubok Gallery, New York; a specialist collector with pieces ranging from Marcel Duchamp to Joseph Cornell (magician of mysterious and intricate cabinets). The survey includes over seventy artists drawn across generations from the... [more]
