Statement
IAIN BAXTER& was born in England in 1936. His family immigrated to Calgary, Canada, the following year. He completed a Bachelor of Science in Zoology (1959) & a Master of Education (1962) at the University of Idaho, before pursuing a Master of Fine Arts in painting at Washington State University (1964). A formative experience early in his career was studying art & aesthetic theory at Kyoto University with the support of a Japanese Government Foreign Scholarship (1961), & his undergraduate studies in zoology form the roots of ecological concerns still evinced in his conceptual art practice. After completing his MFA, BAXTER& moved to Vancouver, British Columbia, where he was a founder of the “Vancouver School” of photoconceptualism, with Roy Arden & Ian Wallace numbering among his students. Among his numerous awards, BAXTER& was made an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2003.
