Much has been said about the so-called “Belgian collector.” For captains of industry and local dentists alike, collecting contemporary art almost seems to be part of the Belgian DNA—which explains why the country is reputed for having the highest concentration of art collectors per square kilometer. Yet, as more and more Parisian collectors make the move to Brussels, the Belgian collector is becoming increasingly French. In addition to Art Brussels’ Portrait of the Collector as a Work of Art, the strong presence of collectors i... [more]

From the flash and swagger of Vegas, to the manicured, lamppost-lined Main Street of Disneyland, we are proffered up a regular cultural diet of distorted, exaggerated versions of reality. The hyperreal seeps into even the most mundane crannies of our existence: our newspapers, breakfast cereal, tennis shoes, and coupon-clippings. Everywhere you turn there is something to buy, sniff, gnaw on, or run your finger along the sides of that has that certain smack of the real, that kind of chewy, overripe... [more]

Vik_muniz Thoughts on Muniz and Gronon

Coming to New York, I was caught up in the excitement of the uncanny simultaneity of Vik Muniz’s and Philippe Gronon’s exhibitions, both titled Verso, both purporting to be meticulous re-productions of the back of twentieth-century modern master paintings, both having been researched in the vaults of great museums, Muniz in New York, Gronon in France. The only difference, or so I was lead to believe, was that Muniz crafted a replica of the object itself, whereas Gronon photographically re-presented his chosen... [more]

Everything in Brazil's modern culture it seems is celebrated with an exclamation point. And the current show at YBCA promises just that: "originality of the culture of people who live in the tropics." Here, the Tropicaìlia art movement is loudly explored, portraying a uniquely Brazilian art culture. I was, however, left reeling not from the surprise of innovation but by the bold, dizzying colors and the overwhelming aroma of coconut and suntan oil (actual smells!). More cloying were th... In addition to the blockbuster exhibit currently at MOMA, curator Joachim Pissarro, along with Hunter MA students Mara Hoberman and Julia Moreno, organized a companion show to his Van Gogh and the Colors of the Night  that plays off our beloved Dutch Post-Impressionist’s fascination with the night. To:Night - Contemporary Representations of the Night fills both Hunter’s sprawling Times Square Gallery and the college’s more elegant, midtown exhibition space, with works by over 40 international c...
