On the face of it, this exhibition, Néon. Who’s Afraid of Red, Yellow and Blue? is just plain fun. With the Maison Rouge all lit up in different colored neon lights, both industrially produced and hand-crafted  tubes bringing the walls to life, inviting us to walk into spaces saturated in impossible colors. A visit to Néon is ostensibly a joyful, light way to spend an afternoon. Then as we quickly realize, neon has more to it than meets the eye. Neon lights may look pretty, but they are... [more]

Doubt is a concept close to my heart (for all the right – and wrong reasons). It is a state of being separated from fixed ideas, moving into a region where certainties flicker out like an ageing fluorescent strip. I feel this movement into doubt is a primary activity of art: simulation, illusion, questioning, all the while leaving the audience open to new thoughts and ways of thinking. The artist does things and I ask: “Why are they doing this?” Doubt is a region of productivity, of investigation, of cross... [more]

Locus Agonistes aims to participate in the dynamic, lively, and complex debates of contemporary critical cultures in Arab societies and localities adjacent to them in Europe. The project is inspired by the momentous historical forces and the emancipatory logics that are currently reshaping debates on civic identities, political subjectivities, cultural strategies, and artistic practices in Arab societies; and is conceived as a response to the various scenarios of rupture between antagonistic poli... Taking inspiration from Emily Dickenson’s poem of the same name, “The House Without the Door” considers the idea of home as emotionally complicated rather than safe, secure and comforting. Eighteen artists including Mamma Andersson, Louise Bourgeois, Philip-Lorca di Corcia, Luc Tuymans, and Rachel Whiteread use painting, sculpture, installation, and photography to examine the multiple meanings of home with the understanding that home is not only where the heart is, or where comfort and familiar... What I miss most about the T... [more]
