I saw a wonderful thing at the mall the other day. I was standing outside the supermarket when five models wearing replica Yves Saint Laurent Mondrian dresses walked by, each leading a pure bred dog in tow. I readily joined the parade of people accumulating behind these designer dog walkers, and followed them throughout the mall where they would occasionally pause, cue music, perform choreographed poses, then move on. Let’s take a step back. Hoog Catharijne, where I spied these models, is bot... [more]

Materials and what they have to say: An interview with Wilfredo Prieto
by

Amsterdam, Dec. 2011 - Cuban-born, Barcelona-based artist Wilfredo Prieto likes language, but defies labels. He likes to present objects that occupy the gallery space discretely and often lie on the floor, either arranged, scattered, or in a puddle. There is definitely a contrast between the often lengthy titles of his pieces and their minimal appearance, but Prieto takes time making sure the materials can speak for themselves. The artist's work plays with the visitor's expectations, underwhelm... [more]

The premise put forward by curator Nikita Cai for A Museum That is Not favours a broad engagement with the idea of the museum, the related social and material effects of such an institution, as well as the point at which it becomes other than a museum (or—to view it from the other direction—the point at which the other becomes a museum). What we are presented with is a show that, while somewhat disparate, includes tangential approaches that refresh the overall theme while avoiding proscription of... [more]

The collection is S.M.A.K.’s DNA and reflects the museum’s core identity as the pivot between recent art history and current trends. S.M.A.K.’s acquisition policy has developed organically over the years and has three distinct levels. Firstly, the museum strives to form an ensemble around the oeuvre of a select group of artists. Instead of representing an artist with just a single work, S.M.A.K. aims to collect an oeuvre in depth in order to present it in all its complexity. Secondly, there is a sub... [more]

The problem with making an exhibition about what’s not there is that you run the risk of showing nothing at all. Absence is a difficult thing to see, its visibility relying on reference points and shared assumptions. Without the right cues there is a serious risk that viewers won’t notice what they’re meant (not) to see. In “I’m Not Here: An Exhibition Without Francis Alÿs,” a solo-cum-group show at De Appel Jongensschool, curators take this risk, organizing a retrospective of sorts in Alÿs’... [more]
