Blind Pig City, a solo exhibition of new drawings by American artist Edgar Arceneaux, opens on May 12 at Praz-Delavallade. The exhibition continues an investigation into culture in which the city of Detroit functions as an important anchor. This investigation, initially begun through a conversation between Edgar Arceneaux and art historian, Julian Myers, looks into a history of committed urban struggle in the U.S. that is today half-forgotten, repressed, or demonized. Detroit, as location of the... [more]

Susanne Vielmetter Los Angeles Projects is pleased to present a solo exhibition of new work by Edgar Arceneaux in the Berlin gallery space. Based on an ongoing dialogue with author and historian Julian Myers, the exhibition is an investigation of subterranean Detroit. In a complex series of drawings, Arceneaux has developed a visual and linguistic constellation of contradictory yet interconnected historical events which orbit around Michael Heizer s seminal earthwork Dragged Mass Displacem... Wallworks is just that. For her first exhibition as the new Director of Visual Arts at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, Betti-Sue Hertz chose to highlight the architecture of the galleries by commissioning artists to create new works on its walls. Designed by Fumihiko Maki in 1993, the building was intended to facilitate social engagement and be some sort of community haven downtown. The artists were invited to create their works in response to Maki’s vision as well as to two thematic threa... [more]

This summer, the New York City-based public arts organization Creative Time launched its quadrennial project Plot/09: This World and Nearer Ones at Governors Island. As if visiting a beautiful and relaxing oasis nestled in the Upper New York Bay is not cool enough, Creative Time makes it all the more great by installing nineteen artworks by prominent international artists inside and around the island’s ex-military facilities, some dating back to the early 1800s. Though the c... [more]

It has been a rough start to the new millennium, and sadly art survey shows have failed to reflect the context in which art makers and viewers live. Thankfully Lauri Firstenberg of LAXART has remedied the disconnect with the 2008 California Biennial. Before you walk in the door, Sam Durant's banners (in English and Spanish) hijack the OC's civic-boosterism-via-banner-blight, by reminding residents that their comfortable homes were built by the sweat of an undocumented workforce, on a piece of... Edgar Arceneaux at SUSANNE VIELMETTER LOS ANGELES PROJECTS September 13th, 2008 - October 30th, 2008

Edgar Arceneaux’s current exhibition at Susan Vielmetter Projects has a ravenousness that is at times as frustrating as it is intoxicating. It’s hungry to engage immense ideas—metaphysics, phenomenology, cosmology—and, as always, such ideas tend to be elusive. Arceneaux knows this and whenever he stops trying to depict the abyss and simply interacts with it, his work has the satiating quality of an ocean swim. You feel you’re a part of infinity instead of a powerless observer. In the main galle... [more]
