It was afternoon. In Copenhagen. A charming, too-handsome-for-words mutual acquaintance relayed the news that Denmark had been crowned the richest country in the EU. I couldn’t vouch for this, but its capital appeared to be the most sustainable of all the conscientiously green cities I’d visited in northern Europe. Of course I wasn’t travelling all the way from America to Scandinavia for wind farms, organic elderberry juice, or even the first-time thrill of ordering drinks at an honest-to-God Ice Bar.... This weekend I visited Amsterdam’s Stedelijk Museum for the first time. While this probably sounds like an unforgivable oversight (or just plain laziness) to you, it’s not. The Stedelijk, Amsterdam’s only modern and contemporary art museum, has been closed for years undergoing renovations and the construction of a new extension. Don’t get too excited – this is no grand reopening; more construction and closed doors are yet to come – but from August 28, 2010 until January 9, 2011 v... [more]

In his brief essay Introduction to the book of the same title, Norwegian critic Jonas Ekeberg has introduced the term “new institutionalism” to the curatorial discussion (1). Derived from new management debates, the term describes a range of experimental institutional practices that take their own conditions as a starting point for critical reconsideration of curatorial devices such as the art exhibition, the catalogue, the collection, and so on. This was in 2003. When the project... [more]

Previously, in the Mary Koszmary (Nightmares) trilogy: Before an empty Warsaw stadium, left-wing Polish activist Slawomir Sierakowski has given an impassioned speech calling for the three million Jews who left Poland after the war to return. The key message: 3,000,000 Jews can change the lives of 40,000,000 Poles. Sierakowski has promised the wondrous things that might follow this reunion. If you want, we’ll travel to the moon together. We left off with Sierakowski and a group of schoo... [more]

The state of the world upsets the artistic production, and even the way we interpret works of art. After years of glitter and cynicism, brutality and violence surround us while we wait and hope for a humanist bright spell. The show won't feature any image of armed conflicts, of social or economic crises, no idea for a social redemption. It will only try to underline how the global situation reflects on the artists (or on the artworks). A partial and biased collective show in which very... [more]

Yael Bartana’s solo exhibition at PS1 Contemporary Art Center features five video installations that span the last six years. Bartana, an Israeli artist who is now based in both Tel Aviv and Amsterdam, focuses her work on the place that she grew up, exploring social rituals and activities in Israel in stark relation to the constant presence of the State, war, and insecurity.  With a roving and afflicted eye of an anthropologist, Bartana uses her camera to create poetic investigations into t... Amsterdam, Sep. 2012 - The past few years have brought a renewed relevance to politics in contemporary art, a necessary reflex of the cultural world to global economic and societal conditions from which it can no longer pretend to be independent. Activism is increasingly affecting the aesthetics of visual arts and, this summer, it literally colonized its institutions, when the latest Berlin Biennale populated the KunstWerke with protesters from the Occupy and Indignados movements. Even fairs li... [more]
