photography, modern, digital, abstract

I’m an abstract digital artist. My work has been described as very contemporary with luscious colors that remind one of experimental films of the 1960’s. Viewers say the richness of the colors invoke great emotion. I create textural works that are ethereal based. The process is very organic as the work initially is unrecognizable but then becomes visible as I manipulate the saturation, hue, tint, contrast and temperature on my Windows photo processing program. My own creative attachment unfolds as I’m creating the work making the work very autobiographical.

I create digital art using my aim and shoot Kodak Easyshare camera with emphasis on Contemporary Abstracts by shooting into kitchen and bathroom sinks, greasy pans, dusty lightbulbs, boiling pots of water and swimming pools.

I create art as an extension of my attempts to balance the insanity of the outside world with the calm and rational world I live in interiorly.

I don't use Photoshop but use Windows' photo processing program adjusting the temperature, hue, tint, contrast, and saturation keeping the photo/digital 'toys' to a minimum. Using this stripped down process I'm able to work with the full color spectrum that is inherent in the light photographed. In this way I am not changing the light as much as 'revealing' what is already there but not seen by the naked eye. Twenty to fifty keystrokes later I have a new world.

Laurie was born in the Bronx, NY., moved ten times in three states and finally settled in Los Angeles where she works with toddlers by day and does art by night. She’s been shooting since she was in third grade when her uncle, who worked at GAF, influenced her when he and his family moved upstairs from Laurie’s family. Laurie worked behind the scenes in L.A. TV news production for 20 years where she won the LA Press Association award for continuity. In the late 80’s she was a contributor to the LA Reader and shot over 25 stories. She also spent ten years singing in local dance/swing bands until her creative focus changed direction back to photography.
