Statement

ARTIST STATEMENT

I am interested in both abstract and figurative forms and how they interact.  These forms sometimes develop an intricate and complicated relationship.  My process is monotype, a type of printmaking made by painting on a smooth surface, glass or copper plate.  The image is then transferred onto a sheet of paper by using a monotype printing press.  Monotyping is a unique process in that every print is one of a kind.  I often add sewing elements to the print symbolizing the handmade craftsmanship inherent in printmaking.

BIOGRAPHY

I was very fortunate to grow up with a mother who was a talented artist.  She encouraged me to explore art at a young age.  In the late 70’s I studied Fine Art at UCLA and I was influenced by my teacher Alexis Smith, as well as Laddie Dill and Chris Burden.  Upon graduating from UCLA I became interested in Graphic Arts.  Eventually, I started my own Graphic Design Firm and produced art ranging from brochures and logos to record covers and invitations.  In the mid-90’s I studied Textile Design and earned a 2-year extension degree at UCLA.  For 10 years I worked as a graphic artist and used my knowledge of these various disciplines.  Eventually, I went back to my roots as a fine artist and have been printmaking and painting since 2005.  Printmaking’s graphic elements are what fascinate me.  I am now also working on large scale paintings with abstract and graphic forms.
