Statement
Winner of the prestigious MacArthur Fellowship and many other awards, Alfredo Jaar is a native of Santiago de Chile (born 1956), where he studied architecture and film direction. Since 1982, he has lived and worked in New York City. His work has been exhibited in solo and group shows at museums throughout the world, including the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York, Chicago's Museum of Contemporary Art and the Moderna Museet in Stockholm. Jaar has also displayed work at the biennials in Venice, São Paulo, Johannesburg, Sydney, Istanbul, and Kwangju. His work was prominently featured in the 2002 documenta in Kassel with his celebrated installation piece Lament of the Images.
Alfredo Jaar is one of the most uncompromising artists working today. His installations, combining elements of photography, architecture and stage design, and often featuring graphic documentary imagery in the form of back-lit transparencies, explore the complex relationships between developed nations and the so-called Third World. In his work, Jaar tracks and highlights the ironies and injustices which characterize those relationships, and it focuses on how the mass media affects people's ability to see, think and feel..
