My work’s throughline has always had an aspect of social interaction-emotion meets object behavior. I am interested in how we act with and respond to cultural practices and objects we make or own.  Recently in a series entitled, A Measure of ImBalance, 2009-2015, I made over 20 acrylic paintings, many small ink drawings, books, and several graphite drawings, exploring arrangements of interacting rocks, embodying personalities.

A Measure of ImBalance

In 2007, on a trip to Gettysburg, PA, I was struck by the eeriness of the battle fields, the grave markers, forested hills, and especially the immense rock formations and outcroppings, on which held the nation’s bloodiest battles. As my son played on and under the rocks, I noticed how the layout of these juxtaposed rocks seemed to still house the interactions of soldiers, eating, sleeping, hiding, resting, and splayed lifeless across the surfaces. Large formations like these protect and defend, group, and divide; without these arrangements they would not have been protected or sheltered. We are rocks.  In typical social systems we compete, protect, cooperate, , confront, and transform with each new arrangement.  I became interested in how random groupings form relationships, make arrangements that tell a story. These structures engender social interactions, action and response. While painting juxtapositions of these objects, initially, they begin to tell stories about my own relational situations.  It has become an investigation of the social theory of rocks, of hidden stories and unfolding emotions.
