Artist Statement

I am fascinated by the potential a painting holds for implying movement, energy, and visual weight

despite the fact that its material form is fixed both spatially and temporally; that there can appear to

be gravity or a physical force where there is actually none.

I like to wander in the spaces between pure abstraction and mimetic depiction. Sometimes a

painting’s success depends on a strong correlation with the world we are familiar with. At other

times it is a burden and unnecessary.

Although the natural world is referenced in various ways, my paintings never depict a specific place.

They are articulated in a manner that evokes the ‘conception’ of a place or space: perhaps, like a

memory or vision. In this way, they feel more like a manifestation of my imagination. I sometimes

envision them as someone else’s; someone whom I do not know and have never met.

I would not call my work sacred, nevertheless the language of metaphysical forms, along with that

which is fantastic, are clearly present. Post-apocalyptic landscapes, nuclear winters, and shattered

belief systems are often part of this content.
