Georgia O’Keeffe led an aesthetic life of precise and specific preferences that informed her daily life as well as her artistic practice. She was discriminating about the views that became the subject of her artwork, as well as the materials and tools she used to create her extraordinary body of work. “O’Keeffiana: Art and Art Materials” offers a view of her artistic practice in a rich selection of artworks in various media – watercolor, charcoal, graphite, pastels, oil, and sculpt... I saw David Wojnarowicz’s Fire in My Belly, 1987, the day before it was pulled from the exhibition "Hide/Seek" at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C. The exhibit itself has been touted by the gallery as “The first major museum exhibition to focus on sexual difference in the making of American portraiture.” Because of pressure from the Catholic League, and complaints from Virginia Rep. Eric Cantor (amongst others who haven’t actually seen the exhibition), the show... [more]

"Modern in America: Works on Paper, 1900-1950s," at the Art Institute until April 4, “offers viewers the opportunity to ruminate on what constituted ‘modern’ in America at various moments in the first half of the 20th century,” according to the exhibition text.
