Statement

FRANCESCA FINI
live media performer, videoartist, documentarist.

Francesca Fini is an Italian artist working with mixed media, video and performance art. Her live projects, always addressing social and political issues, are mixed with lo-fi technology, homemade interaction design devices, live audio and video. She hacks and cracks everyday objects such as surveillance cameras, wii-mote sensors and therapeutic electrodes, mostly used to give to her work an ironic flavor. “Technology is interesting, but rather than call your smartphone I prefer to twist your stomach talking to you through plastic cups connected with a string”. Primarily interested in video and live art, she also creates artworks assembling performance art "relics" and manipulating video art still frames.  With a deep training as a digital artist, she worked for 15 years in the field of television authoring and production. In 2000 she met the American artist Kristin Jones and they collaborated on the project "Tevereterno", creating installations for the city of Rome. Again with Kristin Jones, Kiki Smith and other international artists in 2008 she has participated in the River to River Festival in New York, projecting her animation "Moon Loop" on the trees along the Hudson River.

Among the significant events in which she took part in the last few years we cite the 2011 WRO Biennale in Poland, where she was  placed in the performance art section along with Stelarc and Istvan Kantor, the ADD Festival at MACRO Museum in Rome, RomaEuropa Festival, the finals of Laguna International Art Prize in Venice and Celeste Prize in New York, the Film Festival of Montpellier, the Berlin Directors Lounge, IKONO TV Film Festival, the FILE Electronic Language International Festival in Brazil, FONLAD Digital Art Festival, Cologne Off and Magmart Video Art Festival, which she won in 2010, 2012 and 2013. In 2012 she was invited to participate in the "Venice International Performance Art Week", curated by VestAndPage, featuring among others the work of Valie Export, Jan Fabre, Yoko Ono, Boris Nieslony and Hermann Nitsch. In 2013 she won the "FONLAD Performance Art Residency" to prepare a new performance in Coimbra with the support of the Italian Institute for Culture, and was invited to Chicago for the Rapid Pulse International Performance Art Festival. In the same year she was selected for the prestigious Video Art Yearbook by the Department of Visual Arts at the University of Bologna, but she later decided to withdraw her video as a result of disagreements with her selector.

For her Art and Coherence in personal conduct are the sides of the same coin.

She performs and exhibits her work in galleries and museums worldwide.
