Statement

I am a self taught artist. I learned mostly through reading and experimentation. I started with acrylics and noThw work with oil as well. I recently started building my own frames custom to my paintings.

I live in Lancaster California and I have been showing my work in Los Angeles since 2008.

I get my inspiration from many places;Victorian fashion and machinery, Fairy Tales/Myths, Art Nouveau and Surrealism.  I consider these influences as a starting point and in the end something new is created from filtering through my own perspective.

The following was written by Kelly Castillo for my show Fiction at Rothick art haus in November 2009

Elizabeth Caffey’s series “Fiction” stars a cast of women jaded, suspicious, and wise.  There is an air of gaslight romance in her portraits placing them in an idealize 19th century Victorian era.  A time when naivetivity and coquettishness among women were attributes, but while Caffey’s women are coy there is a deep understanding behind their stare.  Reserved pride and quiet understanding, make no mistake, her women play the heroine.

Elizabeth Caffey is an illustrative painter whose work reflects her love affair for all things feminine and vintage.  Her influences come from Victorian era, but will mix in elements of science fiction and fantasy into a pseudo-Victorian mechanical steampunk style setting her narrative of silent rebellion with elements of femininity, fantasy, and fiction.
