Statement

Born on  1982, in San José, Costa Rica.At the age of 16 she initiates  in the art , for   two years she  studied Chemical Engineering and Philosophy at  the University of Costa Rica . In 2000 she  enter the University of Costa Rica's Shcool of Fine Arts, mayoring Painting and Printmaking. In 2007 she travels to Mexico  to participate at the first drawing bienal ,” Rafael Cauduro”, that same year she travels to Cuba  to participate of the workshop ,” multiple transparency” ,  she returns to Costa Rica and obtains the first prize at “Valoarte” Group show of latinamerican art , in 2008  she was the  artist in residence  at the Experimental Printmaking  Institute at  Easton Pa USA .

Her art work is about the study of  the individual identity from the familiar surroundings in a profound and sarcastic way, from which  autobiographical elements emerge. The  images suggest that  families are not so pretty or perfect as they seem but, they are fundamental  in the constitution of the individual  identity.  The speech in my  work, appeals to old photos of family groups but it adds a quota of irony , because the characters express a relationship of apparent normality  that`s change while  it`s  contemplated. It`s imperfect, incomplete or far from ideal , These are paintings in search of the bizarre and they let us see indirectly , what lies beyond the apparent normality of the family group Trough disturbing characters that invade the spectator`s space I represent desires and  I also like to  play  with the  ideals,  and  stereotypes .

ARTIST STATEMENT

Artist Statement

“Asuntos de familia “ ( Family Matters ) A profound and satirical study of individual identity.

For me the act of painting is like having a diary , because a lot of autobiographical elements always emerge.

This work in particular is very personal , is about the formation of the individual identity from the familiar surroundings, and It began by the interest towards topics related with the psychoanalisys and also by memories of my past.
Through authors like Freud and Lacan, I explore and study the themes of the unconscious , duality and Otherness. And those elements direct me to” The family” , cause according to Lacan ,our identity is going to be form in base of the others and the family will be our first “ others” .

The duality, is an element that is very important for me and its also a present element in this works: who I am for myself and who i am for the others . We defined ourselves through the others, since the identity begins with a physical sensation of the limits of our own body in relation to the others , and their location in the space. Thus the Lacanian concept of “Otherness” is fundamental in this series of works that reflect childhood memories.

It`s imperfect, incomplete or far from ideal , These are paintings in search of the bizarre and they let us see indirectly , what lies beyond the apparent normality of the family group Trough disturbing characters that invade the spectator`s space i represent desires and I also like to play with the ideals, and stereotypes.

One of the autobiographical elements in this work is associated with the fact that my mother suffer amnesia for two years when I was four , and she could not remember me for that time , and also the lack of personal photographs of my childhood. There for , one of the implicit motivations has been to reclaim part of those childhood experiences like “a necessity to include me in the photos in which I did not appear as a child”,
