"Using scissors and machine, I approach the human figure through intricate piecing, layering and drawing with stitching. The rich patterns of printed material attract me for their pointillist qualities and how the eye is engaged. For me, fabric has become the perfect vehicle with which to narrate what is multifaceted, often non-verbal and invisible in the human experience."
Deidre Scherer’s thread-on-layered-fabric work is included in over one hundred and sixty exhibitions worldwide such as her solos at The Baltimore Museum of Art; the Maltwood Art Museum in Victoria, BC; and the Everson Museum of Art in Syracuse, NY. Her work is featured extensively in publications as well as in the documentary film, “Holding Our Own” -complete with scenes from HUC-JIR Museum’s opening of her “Surrounded by Family and Friends” exhibition.
Scherer received the 2010 Rhode Island School of Design Alumni Award for Artistic Achievement; the 2008 Humanities Award from the American Academy of Hospice & Palliative Medicine; and fellowships from the Vermont Arts Council and the Open Society Institute.
