Statement

I have long been intrigued by the deteriorating landscapes of large cities.  The crumbling walls of paint, weathered signs and buildings that add character and create a patchwork of interesting layers and texture.  Seeing these objects randomly co-exist provide me with my initial concepts and motivation to create.

I strive to recreate a similar environment by adding layers of paint, text, images, and a variety of salvaged materials.  Although I often begin a new piece with a central object and color palette in mind, my work evolves freely through a process of building layers and textures, and then sanding them down to create a weathered surface.

Early in my career, I painted solely with oil paints, but this quickly evolved to include acrylic, fabric, wood, metal, and any other material interesting enough to attach to the surface.  Over time, painting became creating, which then became constructing and I soon realized that “building” a painting was much more satisfying creatively.

I have also found inspiration from my travels across Asia, where my most recent home was in Tokyo, Japan.  I currently live and work in the San Francisco Bay Area.
