Lila Afiouni was born and raised in Australia. She studied fine art at both the National Art
School and St George college of Tafe in Sydney, receiving a Bachelor of Fine Art with
Honors in Drawing. Her discipline varies from painting and drawing to installation. She
just completed a new series of paintings based on the theme of radio's; their aesthetic
and the metaphysics of connectivity between radio and listener. This series was shown
at the annual Google Show at Hardware Gallery in Sydney.
In 2007, Lila was awarded a studio residency at the Cite Internationale des Arts in Paris by the Power Institute of Art and Culture. She lives in Australia and is currently in San Francisco, working on a new series of projects for 2011. Below is a statement made by the artist.
"I have always looked to storytelling as my subject matter in every work. Whether it is a story
fabricated from a surrealist tradition or an interpretation of my own culture, I am always searching for a way to define the boundary between aesthetic, meaning and discovery. All of my works tell the story of a past in some other land or of an elaborate constructed future that is unwritten and
unknown. My work explores themes such as alchemy, abstraction, myth and legend. It often refers to subtle tones of exotic cultures infused with the tradition of the west."
