Imagine a summit called by feminist activists and artists representing all of the nuanced wings of the movement. In this time of uncertainty about the role of feminism in the art world, these delegates wonder who could best represent the complexities of feminism and feminist theory without apology. The name they arrive at is Lily van der Stokker, whose new show at Koenig & Clinton is a sprawling pink spectacle comprised of flowery sculptures and wall paintings that illustrate the artist’s theoreti... I saw a wonderful thing at the mall the other day. I was standing outside the supermarket when five models wearing replica Yves Saint Laurent Mondrian dresses walked by, each leading a pure bred dog in tow. I readily joined the parade of people accumulating behind these designer dog walkers, and followed them throughout the mall where they would occasionally pause, cue music, perform choreographed poses, then move on. Let’s take a step back. Hoog Catharijne, where I spied these models, is bot... [more]

The difficult question of what should be the inaugural exhibition of the newly extended South London Gallery is cleverly resolved in Nothing is Forever. It is all about the building. The garden. The café. The flat for artists residencies. All have been treated to artistic intervention of the oldest kind, bringing together wall paintings, drawings and text pieces by 20 British and international artists. The original gallery floor was designed by Walter Crane in the 19 century and bears... [more]

One thing after another: an exhibition, an art fair, a glass of good wine, an episode from an American TV series. But each item on the list conjures up what follows: the next exhibition (will it be as good, or better?), the next art fair (who'll be there this time?), the next glass of wine (the last?), and the next episode (bring on the one after!). Each of these follow-ups has its own inner logic: each new element either replaces the previous one (the TV series), adds to it (the wine)... [more]

The artistic positions of Dorothy Iannone and Lily van der Stokker represent different generations that deal with the discussion of feminism as well as with the position of women in society. Since the beginning of the 1960s Dorothy Iannone realised drawings, books, objects and large-sized paintings. Her works often illustrate persons who are characterised by a strong sensuality. With strong colours and high contrasts the figures are accompanied by different texts (dialogues, narrati... [more]
