Heather Brown at Carter and Citizen & Scott Olson at Overduin and Kite Preamble: It has been true for years, I am way over spectacle. Maybe you’re like me. I thought a lot of people felt this way but clearly not enough do because 2012 still looks a lot like 2007. Celebrity continues to be watered down. Abstractionists Unite! Curated by Nancy Chaikin at the Glendale College Art gallery, is a refreshing exhibition that provides a purely pleasurable and visually enriching experience. The exquisitely installed and thoughtful show of 13 artists successfully reveals the thriving nature of contemporary abstraction. Diverse in origin, generation, and gender, the artists' works in this show display a magnetic mixture of boldness and restraint, poetry and prose, an attention to formal concerns and conc... [more]

In his small abstract paintings Ohio-based artist Scott Olson seems to evoke European movements and traditions from art history. Suggestions of the European Avant-Garde, Malevich, Braque and Klee and even the Renaissance and Illuminations are apparent. And yet the paintings are very much Olson’s own. Through a kind of painterly process of cutting and pasting Olson creates works that are both knowing and innocent. The geometric and sometimes erratic motifs shift in scale between intense detail...
