Interview with Eemil Karila and Mind the Box

Berlin, Aug. 2010: Mind the Box is a Berlin collective of five people.  They curate and host art “events” in changing venues around Berlin. One of these events is the popular “Arty Fun Sessions: Interactive Art Playground”, where they encourage the art-goer to break out of the passive, “white box” gallery- malaise and get their hands sticky. Mind the Box’s philosophy rests on the idea of viewer participation in the artwork and they often have selected artists devise ways to get people involved... [more]

There were two things I dreamed of becoming when I grew up that, now in 2010, are as preposterous a prospect for me as princess or astronaut might have been when I was 8. More specifically, it is thick vertical rows of evenly spaced, repeated 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 and 0, that, examined at a distance, make these same numbers subtly emerge in larger format. It’s something of an optical illusion: you have the sensation that if you were to cross your eyes just right, you could reach a numerical unders... [more]

How much does an art performance cost? Can you put a price tag on a past event? Buy a memory? Peering at the price list for works displayed at Exile’s exhibition “Stuart Brisley: Measurement and Division”—which included a five-figure tag for a DVD film of a 1978 performance in London involving the artist slithering naked through rotting food after fasting for 10 days – I at first wondered what exactly was for sale. Now, I am by no means launching accusations of “selling out”, or chiding the gallery fo... [more]
