Romy Treneer was born in the United States and received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography from the University of Washington School of Art. She moved to Paris in 2002. Romy creates photographs of landscapes, people and deserted urban environments. Her work takes the logic of landscape photography and applies it to the human setting.
Romy's photographs are taken in Europe, the United States, and the Middle East but do not remain wedded to place, instead expressing a universality of human landscape. This is evident in her Paris series, which transcends the picture postcard Paris to create explorations of colour, light and surface texture from the fabric of the city. Picturesque skylines are eschewed in favour of skyless street scenes and lay-bys, reflections and architectural features manipulated to create quasi-abstract compositions out of chance encounters.
