Statement

I have a fascination with water. Water has qualities of fluidity, rhythm, luminosity, color, movement, and ultimately, a spiritual essence. Although I am drawn to water as my source of inspiration, my art is non-representational. I want my work to have its own vitality and “life,” and be separate from an illusionary depiction of nature.

My current paintings experiment with color and unconventional materials that deepen the immediacy of the moment while merging the connection between natural phenomena and the formal aspects of painting. The cascading tips are layered until the colors achieve a certain intensity and nuance of light. Some are suspended in mid-stream as if frozen in time, like a snapshot of a specific moment in the making of the work. The bottom edges protrude outward becoming more three-dimensional. Glue gives a transparent effect while simultaneously creating a “vessel” holding paint in a pool. The multiple layers create natural forms that give it tension between the geometric and the organic. I use resin to achieve a certain “wetness.” Because the materials dry quickly, I must work quickly. This spontaneous reaction keeps my process open-ended and puts me in a place that is more intuitive, stimulating an impulsive drive. The process itself becomes a driving force that flows from within and becomes an innate response with no predetermined end.
