A rich resource for the artist, the collector, the curator and the art lover.
An artist with strong ties to minimal art, the works Theodora Varnay Jones produces is the phenomena themselves. Their primary significance is optical and sensory. In her three-dimensional pieces she structures layers upon layers to achieve dimensional depth. The deeper levels are observed through the translucent materials used for the upper layers. The play of light upon and within the inherent surfaces is a physical activity as well as the interplay of the layers, and the slight color shifts determined by the angle from which the work is viewed. Tiny units of similar shapes build the graphite and color pencil drawings on paper; their correlation is as important as the function of the layers in the dimensional works. For a more substantial presence these surfaces are mounted on wood support and covered with several coats of acrylic polymer. Varnay Jones’ work relies on abstract art’s pure language derived from geometry and musical compositions. Her perception of art history, our time’s social concerns and psychology are the underpinnings apparent in her compositions of balance, and indifference. As she constructs and draws every detail by hand she has not only full control, but also perhaps most importantly demonstrates the vanishing input of the craft of art making. A significant aspect, as she points out “the details are the forming elements, the carriers of an unexplainable intricacy of personal history and sensitivity.” Formal clarity, investigative depth, meditation on space and the act of seeing emphasize the value of her uncomplicated yet complex works of art in this exhibition. Born and educated in Budapest, Theodora Varnay Jones has lived in San Francisco for over thirty-five years. Her works have been exhibited extensively, nationally, and in Europe and Asia and she has received numerous awards and grants.
