Erika Hess's work balances upon an attentiveness to material and process developed
through experimentation in the studio. Upon her move to New York City she
became interested in the geometric make up of the surrounding environment and lack of a
horizon line. These two spatial ideas serve as the foundation for her abstract
paintings. The medium of oil paint and the physical process of adding and
subtracting materials through pouring, scraping and sanding allows the process
to dictate the evolution of her work while allowing her to respond to the concept of
pictorial space and tension.
