When I walked through "Duckling Fantasy," a show of Joe Bradley's new works at Almine Rech Gallery in Paris, I kept hearing in my head Shostakovich's third string quartet. These bold and vibrant paintings have that kind of lyrical and astringent energy: angular, ferocious, bristling with life. The paintings here seem rough at first – they've been created on unprepared canvas, in oil, oil sticks and pencils, and they have a child's sense of exploration. But an adult's fascination with possibility, as... [more]

Abstract America: New Paintings and Sculpture is not for me, but I have to admit that the Saatchi Gallery’s done a phenomenal job gathering up artwork by the biggest and brightest in contemporary American abstract artists.  As this was my first visit to Saatchi’s swanky digs in Chelsea, I must also mention that the gallery is phenomenal – perhaps even the best venue for viewing art that I’ve ever come across.  Many of the works in the exhibition seemed too clever for my tas... New York is difficult to fence in. It's offensively arrogant and perplexingly tolerant. Erotically alluring and nauseating repulsive. An oxygen tank for thoughts, and quicksand for illusions. Sentimental Samaritan and merciless lyncher. Empty talk at predictable receptions, and genuine interest in unlikely situations. Voluptuous muse, and flat canvas. Cool business card, target oriented CV, brief acquaintance, entertaining fuck, miserable marriage, harmonic partnership and lifelong frien... [more]

Joe Bradley's "Like A Turkey Thru Corn" surprised me.  I've seen his work before, but never anything like this.  Usually his shows consist of large figures comprised of multiple monochromatic canvases, towering over their audience in the gallery.  The new work, large uncoated canvases, with simple black line drawings done in a childish manner at first seems unrelated.I gave the show some time.  I always liked Bradley's other work and wanted to figure out some connections.  I found... Top Ten:1. Tino Sehgal: Marian Goodman Gallery. I often see shows I don’t like but this was the only show I’ve ever seen that didn’t like me! Last winter Tino Sehgal had performers stand in the rear room of this gallery and discuss art and philosophy. Viewers were acknowledged as they entered and occasionally included in conversations. After answering one of the performers he basically upbraided me. I was horrified, mortified and thrilled. Sehgal has taken "relational esthetics" to a whole... [more]

On the heels of his Schmagoo Paintings exhibition, Joe Bradley spent the last month curating Peanut Gallery, a new group show of what he calls "funny, intimately scaled pieces made of humble materials" for The Journal Gallery. "There's a heckler vibe to a lot of the work," says Bradley, who's assembled everything from a Miles Davis portrait by Keith Mayerson and a Eunice Kim installation of a cardboard robot face (with red and blue lightbulb eyes) to one of Dan Colen's bubble-gum-enhanced canvase...
