Raphaele Shirley

My work takes root in questions of space and scale, time past andfuture, engaging themes of dystopias, utopias, and the problematic of hopefacing the human experience. Drawing from elements of the everyday (man-madeobjects and constructions), as well as natural phenomena (wind, water andlight) my work undertakes a portraiture of the possible, of paralleluniverses and sites of transformation.

Components of chance are central to my process; they grant my work access to a primalenergy and a fertile space of possibilities. It is important for me to approachart in a freehanded manner. I tread lightly in my attempt to harness theephemeral, fusing minimalist aesthetics with the power of new media and attempting to leave ample room for the unexpected.
