Over-Trockeled by Collage

Rosemarie Trockel at WIELS

The first impression when entering the Rosemarie Trockel show at Wiels is rather unwelcoming. The opening room is almost entirely occupied by long brown panels that block the view to the next space. Instead of being religiously placed all around the pristine white walls of the ample exhibition space, the artworks – a series of collages the artist has been producing since 2004 – stand in sharp contrast with the horizontal panels on which they are arranged, almost recalling an announcement board. This themed exhibition is dedicated to the artistic transfer of photographically produced images in the medium of printmaking. The beginnings of this trend lie in the 1960s and the era of Pop Art. The silkscreen print was one of the first printmaking media to use photographic templates. This was quickly followed by offset lithographic printing, which saw another 'trivial' print medium being used to create artistic reproductions. Parallel to this, traditional printing processes such as etching, photogra... [more]

Simply titled and smartly curated, Galerie Crone's Deutsch hosts an impressive roster showcasing some of the biggest names contributing to contemporary German art in the last fifty years. Amid the August wasteland of summer group shows, this exhibition stands out as intellectually complex and visually compelling look at German iconography. It's no secret that Germany has a complicated history. That being said, German national representations are not only delicate but potentially problematic when... [more]

During the time following a moment of devastating collective trauma, like what has happened in Japan this year, there tends to be a questioning of what role Art has in understanding the societal and personal ramifications of such a violent event. In... [more]

There are many that argue that art is elitist; a medium enjoyed only by those specifically educated to decipher and appreciate it, or sufficiently “cultured” to willingly choose paintings and sculpture over pursuits with more mass-appeal. These sceptics are right in that whilst art is available to everyone, not everyone is interested, and by default this makes art the premise of the few rather than the many. On the other hand, being able to wander around the Royal Academy on a Sunday... [more]

The Rubell Family Collection is housed in a modified, clearly marked former Drug Enforcement warehouse that was once a storehouse for confiscated narcotics straight out of Miami Vice. With low slung white couches and a sleek outdoor courtyard that could easily be found on South Beach, it lacks the rough industrial aura of the Margulies Collection, but presents a contemporary array of works with a personalized edge. At a mere 40,000-something square feet, it’s more manageable than its humongous... [more]

[more]
