Statement

LEE WELCH was born in Louisville, KY in 1975. He is currently undertaking an MFA at Piet Zwart Institute, Rotterdam and has studied at the National College of Art and Design, Dublin.

His work has been exhibited widely, including the solo exhibitions: At the still point of the turning world., Galway Arts Centre, Galway (2009); Never Odd or Even and other pieces, The LAB, Dublin (2008); falling somewhere in-between, Queen Street Studios Gallery, Belfast (2006) with forthcoming group exhibitions DONE TO A DEAD END & THE DEAD OR ALIVE SALE, SD&G, Rotterdam (2010) and The Nature of Things, Le Petit Port, Leiden (2010).

Welch's work has been featured in numerous group exhibitions, most recently Clifford Irving Show, Kadist Art Foundation, Paris (2009); MISSING LINK, Andreiana Mihail Gallery, Bucharest (2009); It's not for reading. It's for making, FormContent, London (2009); Non-knowledge, Project Arts Centre, Dublin (2008); Claremorris Open Exhibition, Claremorris curated by Lizzie Carey-Thomas (2008); Based on Our Current Science, Gallery of Photography, Dublin (2008); Play, Draíocht Arts Centre, Dublin (2008); Green Screen, ICA, Newtown, Australia (2008); all colours black (next to nothing), Ashford Gallery,Dublin (2007); Open 4, Crawford Municipal Gallery, Cork (2003); The Return, Goethe-Institut, Dublin (2003).

Welch has recently received the Dublin City Council Arts Bursary (2008) and an Arts Council Bursary (2008) and Travel and Training Award (2009) as well as supported from Culture Ireland (2009). He received the Banff Residency at The Banff Centre, Canada (2010) and Exercises in Folkatronica, Dublin (2003). He was mentioned in Frieze, Issue 120 (2009), as one of "the most significant emerging artists of 2008." Welch is Founder and Director of Four, an exhibition space in Dublin.

Lee Welch lives and works in Rotterdam, The Netherlands.
