Day and night trucks would rumble past, slamming into potholes and screeching on their brakes. The building would literally shake—a constant earthquake—with the only respite on Sunday mornings or during the occasional blizzard. I’ve been ruminating about the “attempt.” I’ve been rolling the word and a few of its meanings over in my mind these last days. (Some joke could be inserted here about “attempts to understand attempt,” I’ll let you come up with your own.) In all this cogitation, the word thankfully did not dissolve into meaninglessness (as some words do when you repeat them too many times—spoon… spoon… spoon… spoon… spoon?), instead it gained a new kind of significance for me. The impetus for this rumination on the word began du... [more]

Late into the night, after the first flush of events of a long weekend of performances in Chinatown for the annual Perform Now! festival, a small crowd lounged on the back patio of Human Resources, sipping the cool, fruity dregs of a welcomed sangria. Two musicians, Emily Lacy and an accompanying violist, Ezra Buchla (formerly of 'Gowns' and 'The Mae Shi') warmed up for a final set to the spare audience. Leaning back to hear the creak of the metal of my folding chair, I sat with my ha... [more]
