Interview with Timur Si-Qin
by Devon Caranicas
2012-09-08
Berlin, Sept. 2012: An interdisciplinary analysis stemming from overlapping theories in biological science, philosophy and psychology have laid the ground work for Berlin-based artist Timur Si-Qin's object based installations. Culling images and products from a diverse range of media, Si-Qin mediates stock photographs, advertising schemes and everyday objects to pointedly tap into humanity's evolutionary predispositions that drive us.
Probing our psyche with subjects as disparate, but nonetheless... [more]

Interview with Felix Kiessling
by Devon Caranicas
2012-05-20
Berlin, May 2012 - The content of Felix Kiessling's work is monumental. In an ongoing exploration into the authenticity of perception, scale and physical reality, Kiessling navigates these weighty topics with a distinct reductive aesthetic. Utilizing controlled installations, documented land interactions and sculpture, the Berlin-based artist produces elegantly succinct works to portray the conceptual notions that drive him.
One such example of this is Der Vektor (The Vektor), an ongoing piece t... [more]

Fabio Morais at Galeria Vermelho
January 24th, 2012 - February 18th, 2012
Posted
1/29/12
Touching on notions of technological reproducibility, photographic malleability and subjective interpretations, Fabio Morais' two-story solo show at São Paulo's Vermelho gallery is an inquiry into the construction of personal knowledge. The Brazilian artist has placed, duplicated and grouped visually nostalgic and historically dated educational material throughout the exhibition space. Dating from the 1960s and 70s, Morais' choice of text, image and objects range from the intimate (a grouping of postc... [more]

JOÃO PENALVA

JOÃO PENALVA at Galerie Thomas Schulte
November 19th, 2011 - January 28th, 2012

12/25/11
Portugese artist João Penalva has filled the Galerie Thomas Schulte's store front window with a handsome installation of dramatically lit stacked kitchen chairs. Hanging on the wall behind the chairs sits a large photograph depicting a similar off-balanced sculptural arrangement. This chair-on-chair presentation instantly calls to mind Kosuth's One and Three Chairs, the well known piece from 1965 of a chair, a photograph of a chair and wall text definition of the word chair, an installation fa... Nina Fischer, Maroan el Sani at Galerie EIGEN + ART (Berlin)

10/9/11
As I walked down Augustrasse last Tuesday I assumed the scrawled red paint on the entrance of Galerie Eigen + Art was just another anarchist tag line, a common sight in Berlin's gentrified neighbourhood of Mitte. However, by the time I reached the front door It became obvious that the Bye Bye Testosteroni wording was not a subversive cultural marker but an accompaniment to Eigen + Art's current show Impero Dei Segni. The aggressive signal was an exciting gesture. In this city notorious for a stron... [more]

John Baldessari: Double Feature
by Devon Caranicas
John Baldessari at Sprüth Magers Berlin
September 23rd, 2011 - October 29th, 2011

10/9/11
Three things make me homesick for Los Angeles: Trader Joe's, palm trees and John Baldessari. For artists who inhabit southern California, there is a mythic quality that surrounds the iconic LA artist as not just a pioneer of conceptual art but a pioneer of our art. Naturally, I was beyond thrilled to discover that his new work from 2011 was now on view at Spruth Magers here in Berlin. Not only because I was excited to see how the 80 year old artist has continued to create and evolve, but also to exp... [more]

Dominions is a collaborative installation from Berlin-based Julian Charrière and Andreas Greiner. Having collected mold samples from various locations throughout their respective home countries of Switzerland and Germany, the artists are now breeding the microbes in large glass vitrines throughout PROGRAM's gallery. These architectural petri dishes range in height and placement throughout the exhibition space, an obvious nod to their topographic origin, while the bacteria they contain have yi... [more]

JONATHAN SCHIPPER at DITTRICH & SCHLECHTRIEM
August 6th, 2011 - August 27th, 2011

While maintaining qualities that are both graceful and mechanic, Jonathan Schipper's electronically engineered investigations are a complex set of visual contradictions. This two-part kinetic installation titled Slow Room is now on view at Dittrich & Schlechtriem (formerly Pool Gallery) and is Schipper's first solo show in Germany.
The exhibition is divided into two works: a mobile-like structure and a full room installation. The more understated of the two, Sexy Shameful Nude Naked Statue Scu... [more]

Problematics of History

Simply titled and smartly curated, Galerie Crone's Deutsch hosts an impressive roster showcasing some of the biggest names contributing to contemporary German art in the last fifty years. Amid the August wasteland of summer group shows, this exhibition stands out as intellectually complex and visually compelling look at German iconography. It's no secret that Germany has a complicated history. That being said, German national representations are not only delicate but potentially problematic when... [more]

Dean Sameshima at Peres Projects
April 29th, 2011 - June 25th, 2011

6/19/11
Dean Sameshima's art is a never-ending quest into the visual investigation of maleness throughout the creation of works that portray unabashed sexual imagery while retaining a quiet vulnerability. His new solo exhibition at Peres Projects' Mitte location, Cruise or Be Cruised, draws heavily from gay print media to construct photographs and silkscreens that explore homoerotic desire, fetish, and ultimately, freedom. Throughout the exhibition, Sameshima has cultivated a raw aesthetic that feels craf... [more]

Kathrin Sonntag at Galerie Kamm
April 30th, 2011 - June 25th, 2011

6/18/11
When discussing art, I have always found the descriptive term "installation" to be annoyingly non-specific and over used. On occasion, however, I will find myself in search of a word to illustrate an exhibition and am left with no other choice than to describe it as such. Kathrin Sonntag's solo show is this occasion. Now on view at Galerie Kamm, the appropriately titled Double Take uses a soft-handed subtlety to orchestrate the reading of objects and photographs in a destabilizing relationship to... [more]
