Randi Reiss-McCormack works in multiple medias including painting, etchings, mixed-media works on paper, and assemblage. Her paintings are combinations of images from varied sources, weaving tales that veer from their meanings, sometimes rendered and improvised, morphed or embellished. Everyday rituals and cyclical patterns are a large part of this painting vocabulary. The strange mix of unease and humor are evident in the use of media and subject matter. Working in a collage sensibility, images coalesce and collapse almost simultaneously. In the compressed space of the canvas, there are many methods employed, including stenciling, printing and layering to create a frenetic, energized sense of movement that flirts with a controlled chaos.
Recently, the paintings and prints have exhibited the influence of printmaking processes and the integration of their marks. Also, the melding of low-tech modalities such as hand printing, sewing and collage combined with digital manipulation and transfers, has enriched this varied vocabulary in new mixed-media venues. The interaction of memory and subconscious on the plethora of visual imagery is the source of this work. The patterns have a magnetic power over the reordered images and time and the subconscious warp them into a state of flux. There is a magnetic tug of war between context and process producing a playful, inventive work.
Randi Reiss-McCormack recently had a solo exhibition at Harmon Art Labs in Washington D.C. and took part in a group exhibition of Printmakers from SOL Print Studios at Stevenson University in Baltimore. She has exhibited in Maryland, Delaware, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, California, Seattle and London, England. She has received the Maryland State Individual Artists Grant numerous times in three different categories. Currently Randi lives and works in Baltimore, MD, USA and is working closely with Sol Print Studios, working on a series of Print Editions in Solar Etching and conducting workshops on techniques to develop photo polymer plates. An upcoming group print exhibition will be this summer at the Cosmos Club in Washington D.C.
