My paintings are about the here and now, about being in front of the painting in real time, in real space and in real light. It has been my desire to create paintings that are calming to look at and evocative, and which asks the viewer to take one's time to look at. They are a vehicle to translate the essence of a memory, an experience, or a fantasy. By using repetitive brush strokes, my intent is to minimize variable mark making in an effort to focus on the juxtaposition and layering of colors. Covering the canvas with a beeswax medium mixed with oil paint creates a subtle translucency and a non-reflective surface which invites the viewer to examine the painting up close. When the mixture is applied in this repetitive manner, spontaneous images are generated which are influenced by the environment, my state of mind and my own limitations.
