Toronto based artist Amy Shackleton (b.1986) has exhibited paintings in New York City, London, Massachusetts, Toronto, Montreal and Calgary. Recently, a timelapse video revealing her unique process went viral, reaching over 1,000,000 people (and counting). Shackleton was recently interviewed on the national television show, CTV Canada AM. Her work has appeared in the Huffington Post, New York Magazine, CBC, CBS, Gizmodo, My Modern Met and Oddity Central. A review of her April 2012 solo exhibition can be found in the Spring Issue of Magenta Magazine. Shackleton was invited to speak on a panel about “Making Art in the Age of New Media” at the 15th Canadian Arts Summit in Banff. She is currently working on a 50 foot long painting, partially funded by the Ontario Arts Council. Shackleton’s paintings adorn dozens of private and corporate collections across North America, including the Colart Collection in Montreal. She received her BFA Honours Degree from York University in 2008. Shackleton is represented by the Elaine Fleck Gallery in Toronto and the Gerry Thomas Gallery in Calgary.
My paintings explore the evolving relationship between nature and cities. Using natural forms as examples for sustainable design, I suggest innovative solutions for urban planning and development. Drawing inspiration from my global travels and photographs, I fuse urban and natural worlds to illustrate my vision of the future—a future where cities welcome the natural world.
My work calls to mind the dystopian post-apocalyptic aesthetic but strangely without all the gloom, hinting at rebirth and optimism. I offer an alternative view to all the inconvenient truths about environmental degradation—I look beyond the issues and suggests solutions. More and more developments are making changes by incorporating green roofs, rain gardens, solar energy, urban agriculture, and other energy efficient standards. My paintings reveal the progress being made with the design, construction and operation of sustainable buildings.
I developed a unique process, earning the title “gravity artist.” I apply the paint with squeeze bottles and rotate my canvas to guide each drip as it falls down the stretched surface. Thorough planning, measuring and layering is involved, but I'm at the mercy of gravity, which helps create organic details in my work. My calculated, yet spontaneous process mimics the duality of my urban/natural visions.
