Life on the Flip Side Concurrent exhibits at 516 ARTS home in on alternative communities By Drew Morrison The first thing you notice is a bearded man with “Hug Life” tattooed across his beer gut, standing on a homemade raft. This image, and numerous other examples of alternative living, are the focus of two summer exhibits at 516 ARTS: Across the Great Divide, a collection of photographs by Roberta Price, and Worlds Outside This One, featuring more than a dozen contributors. Across the Gre... HAIKU REVIEW: Roberta Price, whether she meant to or not, compiled one of the great photographic documentations of the American hippie lifestyle in the late 1960s and '70s. Resident of and frequent visitor to the communes that sprouted amongst the edenic (if hardly forgiving) mountains and valleys of Colorado and New Mexico, Price regarded her fellow ruralists as friends and family and co-conspirators, but shot them also with the analytical eye of an anthropologist. In other words, these are no... [more]

Concurrently with Across the Great Divide, 516 ARTS will host a related exhibition in the downstairs gallery organized by guest curator Erin Elder titled Worlds Outside This One, featuring a group of emerging international artists and innovators responding to the legacy of homesteading, squatting, hermitage and fort building. The exhibition addresses the urge for momentary acts of self-determination, creating hand-hewn spaces in the gallery and interactive experiences for visitors, as well as s... [more]

The Good Earth by Adrian Gomez To be one with the land is a difficult yet simple way to live. Technology troubles are nonexistent. Hard work is needed, but the rewards are plentiful. For generations, communities popped up around the world where people chose to live off the land. From building their own houses to growing and raising their food, those communities strived to make a simpler life. It will host exhibitions and programs that explore self-sufficiency, community and visions of utopia.... [more]

Utopian ideals of hippie era illuminated by modern context of a pair of new exhibits at Downtown’s 516 Arts By Heather Saxton Exploring community, autonomy and counter culture, UnCommon Ground presents harmonious visions of utopia in a summer program at Albuquerque’s 516 Arts. Two exhibits form the heart of the new show: Worlds Outside This One highlights innovative artists from around the globe who collaborate to illuminate the legacy of ad-hoc communities, and Across the Great Divide f...         The third installment of Brian Nuda Rosch’s Paper! Awesome! show at Baer Ridgeway picks up where the previous two left off and with the same premise: limit artists to an 8 ½ by 11 paper canvas (with a notable few exceptions) and a relatively short time frame. The resulting works offer an intriguing cross-section of young and young-ish artists working with a broad range of media. Sprawling over the two level exhibition space, the install certainly has the look of diversity, rang... [more]
