Christine Wong Yap makes installations, works on paper and multiples to explore themes of optimism and pessimism.
In addition to a recent solo project at Swarm Gallery (Oakland, CA),
her exhibitions include group shows at the Museum of Craft and Folk
Arts, the De Anza College Euphrat Museum, the San Francisco Arts
Commission Gallery, Intersection for the Arts, Kearny Street Workshop,
the Oakland Museum Restaurant Gallery, Southern Exposure, Pro Arts
Gallery and the Berkeley Art Center. Nationally, her work has been
shown at Limner Gallery (NYC), A.I.R. Gallery (NYC), Asian Arts
Initiative (Philadelphia), and V.U. Gallery (Bellingham, WA). Her work
has also been exhibited at Green Papaya Art Projects (Philippines),
Osaka University (Japan) and the FRED Festival (UK). Christine's work
is in the Alameda County Art Collection.
She has been recognized with the Center for Cultural Innovation's Investing in Artists grant, a Murphy Fellowship in the Fine Arts, a San Francisco Bay Guardian Local Hero Award, an Active Element grant for art activism, the Women of Color Resource Center's Sister of Fire Award and a Yozo Hamaguchi Endowed scholarship. In collaboration with Kearny
Street Workshop, Donna Keiko Ozawa and Bob Hsiang, Yap has also been
the recipient of a Creative Work Fund grant and a San Francisco
Foundation Fund for Artists Matching Commissions Grant.
Born in California, Christine holds a BFA and MFA from the
California College of the Arts (CCA). Her involvement in community work
includes apprenticing with an internationally recognized muralist and
leading 17 mural projects around the country. She lives in Oakland, CA
and is an Affiliate Artist at the Headlands Center for the Arts in
Sausalito, CA.
