Alexandra Rowley was born and raised in New York City. She studied studio art and art history at Kenyon College and photography at Institute Speos in Paris. Prior to dedicating herself to image-making full time, she worked at Robert Miller Gallery, for TheaWestreich Art Advisory and then co-founded August Press, a boutique photography book publishing company. She brings a deep understanding of artand media history to her work.
While her images incorporate various photographic genres such as still life, landscape, portrait and interiors, much of her recent work forms a loose - often oblique- autobiography. She plays with abstraction and minimalism and yet much of her work has a lush and visceral quality.
No matter what her subject, her images resonate with a strong sense of humanity – it’s the people, often unseen, who drive the work. Her interest in process and materials is evident as she expands beyond photography, making installations that incorporate ceramics and, as can be seen in this exhibition, sound.
Alexandra has exhibited her photographs internationally, including solo shows at Dina Mitrani Gallery in Miami, GalerieSpeos in Paris andGeukens and de Vil in Belgium, as well as group exhibitions in New York, Los Angeles and Miami. She has had the privilege of being awarded fellowships for artist in residence programs at various foundations around the country, including Ucross Foundation and Atlantic Center for the Arts, as well as awards – most recently by PDN in 2010.
