> STATEMENT
The bright colors in the oils of Taras Borovyk seem so impossibly thick that one is reminded of the chalk children use to draw on asphalt. But his technique is anything but childlike. Every one of his subjects is rendered with a restraint that somehow perfectly coexists with the decorative exuberance he brings to his portrayals, resulting in harmonious imaging that seems more like a view of real-life through a special filter than representationalism. "Art lives within a person," he says, "manifesting itself as a vibrant shadow of the intricacies of existence." His work is designed to counterbalance our age of unquestioned materialism, the systematic overlooking of the beauty all around us.
Although Borovyk has resided in New York for the past decade, his experience in his native Ukraine, where he both received his training and worked as an interior and exposition designer, remains for him an instructive presence. "In Ukraine, art is a means of expression and a way of life," he relates. "It is hard to forget that."
